A participatory process is a sequence of participatory activities (e.g. first filling out a survey, then making proposals, discussing them in face-to-face or virtual meetings, and finally prioritizing them) with the aim of defining and making a decision on a specific topic.
Examples of participatory processes are: a process of electing committee members (where candidatures are first presented, then debated and finally a candidacy is chosen), participatory budgets (where proposals are made, valued economically and voted on with the money available), a strategic planning process, the collaborative drafting of a regulation or norm, the design of an urban space or the production of a public policy plan.
OUSD Community Engagement 2026-27
Refining our questions for the community, and solidifying our voice
About this process
The Multi-Stakeholder Engagement Group (MSEG) enters a vital new phase after a spring and summer of engagement and reflection.
2026-27 will be a vital year for OUSD; Our district must find savings of $30 million this year in order to continue any work towards financial sustainability. The Multi-Stakeholder Engagement Group (MSEG) enters this new process after a spring and summer of engagement and reflection. What we've learned so far has been monumental, but we're just getting started. In the spring and late summer, we asked our community to help us define meaningful engagement. We also asked what was most important, and what was working well, for the students and families at our schools. We've collected that information and published it in a way that includes all the voices we've heard, in a way that is easy to understand.
During our 2026-27 process, we will refine our questions further, focusing directly on what basic staffing is at our schools, how much it costs, and what that means to our community. We will also continue to pursue a broader, inclusive reach in our engagements, as we look to bring in voices from communities that will be most affected by the changes coming to OUSD.
